WHAT IS A CAKE SMASH?
Well, it’s exactly that!
The trend for Cake Smash photography started in the US. It’s fast becoming a big trend here in the UK too and we always get asked What is a Cake Smash. Well to celebrate your babies 1st or 2nd Birthday and the big milestone in their life. You sit them down in a cute outfit and present them with a cake for them to literally smash.
Parents would book the session a month before their little one’s birthdays and then use the images from the session for their child’s party invites or to show the images on this milestone birthday. Most of our clients choose to book their little one’s session on or around their birthday, it’s a great memory for you to have and a fab way to spend a birthday.
Debbie & I pride ourselves on a super fun and super messy Cake smash sessions but appreciating the need for them to be child led. Meaning we will always go at your child’s pace. One-year-olds are often in the stage of playing strange, we’re used to this and usually after a few minutes they warm up to us and the studio environment and start having fun.
Our cake smash shoots have three stages.
- Stage one starts with a Clean shoot. This is where your child gets to have some fun images before they’re all covered in cake. You are more than welcome to bring a change of outfit if you want!
- Stage two is introducing the cake. We love this part, their little eyes just light up & after a few minutes of looking to their parents for reassurance, they start to tuck into their yummy cake. Most of the time, the cake destruction is down to parents helping. Breaking the big chunk off to start with & encouraging your child to smash & play with the mess. You’ll be surprised how little cake actually gets eaten and if not all get’s destroyed you can even take it home with you.
- Stage three is bath time. All babies love a bath and all parents love a clean baby. We bring the bathtime fun into the studio and they can have a good splash and get clean while we capture even more smiles and lots of laughter.
You can choose from our array of Backdrops and outfits and all our lovely yummy cakes come from The Cake Revolution. Let us know if you have any allergies. Mel is used to working with allergies, so it’s no problem.
Sometimes cake smashes go sideways! And that’s OK. I’m flexible. If your baby hates the cake, is scared of it, doesn’t want to play with us… we can adapt. We usually will just clean them up reset the backdrops and do some other poses to ensure we get you a nice Birthday collection.
